The Marriage License and Marriage certificates are two different documents. The Marriage License permits a marriage to take place. The Marriage Certificate indicates that a legal marriage has been performed. After the event the wedding officiant will file the Marriage License with the State of Hawai'i.

The state will mail your Marriage Certificate document to the forwarding address you listed on the application within 4 to 6 weeks.

When physically obtaining the license, you both need to be present. The only legal documentation required is a government-issued photo ID, such as a drivers license or passport. If previously married, proof of original divorce decree or death certificate only needs to be presented if the divorce or death was finalized within 30 days of applying for a marriage license. State of Hawaii Marriage License fee of $65
